Exhibition-research Boys by girls

July 3 - 31, 2020

Curators of the exhibition - the founders 39.9gallery Kateryna Lypivka, Anastasia Lebega, Kateryna Levchenko. 39.9gallery is an innovative online gallery that presents relevant and accessible Ukrainian art. Among the artists of the gallery are those who are at the stage of formation of their careers, and already known artists

The Boys by girls project is an interactive study of the perception of masculinity. The curators invite the visitor to explore the issue of masculinity and determine what features are characteristic of this concept today together with contemporary Ukrainian artists. Masculinity is defined as a set of characteristics and traits that society recognizes as inherent in men in a certain period of history.

What is the reflection of masculinity today, in a period of uncertainty, isolation, unemployment and economic crisis? Is there a change in gender roles and social perceptions of men and women?

The project features works by artists who reflect on masculinity by visualizing personal experiences: they view the male body as a sexual object, depict male fragility, and focus on some aspects of masculinity.

The project will feature works by: Elmira Shemsedinova, Alexandra Voronina, Zhenya Laptiy, KIN, Sasha She, Sonya Umanskaya.

Visitors are invited to perceive this interpretation through the prism of their own experience and choose an art object in the exhibition space that best reflects their personal attitude to the topic. According to the results of the research, the group of curators will select and play a work of art, which will be the most relevant visual reflection on the theme of masculinity.

Olexandra works with mediums such as sculpture and painting, combining three-dimensional art with flat art. Her task is to make art objects look large and coherent from afar, while nearby they have a detailed and rich look. The author explores the process of interaction between the work and the viewer, is interested in how shape and color affect it.

Sonya is an artist and animator from Kyiv and lives in Israel. She calls her works of art a "bridge of contact with society." This is her personal way of reflection. In the process of creating works, the artist reflects on the theme of sex, relationships, loneliness, naivety and nostalgia. The plots of Sonya's drawings are accessible and topical, you can see there the reflection of life situations, familiar to many. "Sometimes I try to talk about deep and serious things, using primitive compositions and humor."

Maryna is an architect and artist. Among the means of her visual expression are graphics, animation and photography. Prints photo-zones, co-author of the XUIANH project. The art of animation is the closest to Maryna, she directs her own cartoons. The aesthetics of her graphic works comes from the simplification of images, their condensation to the most necessary elements for the narrative. She uses a mixture of traditional and digital techniques. Her photographs are mostly reportages in their nature, they fix fragments of condensed reality through instant emotion. Dovhanych's works are a reflection on the Ukrainian cultural background and the global social environment.

Zhenya's photographs are devoted to the illusory world, fantasies, as well as the themes of nature and corporeality.

For reasons of anonymity, Zhenya prefers to remove the naked body. After all, nudity depersonalizes and does not bind to time, in addition, the naked body can belong to anyone. The artist is driven by the challenge as a way to develop and create dissimilar series of works. In Zhenya's pictures you can see childhood memories transformed through adult perception. Some series are devoted to literary and cinematic plots.
